Retired Physician

Dr. BONNELL Dies At 86

Dr. F. S. BONNELL (sic. Frank Sumner BONNELL), 86, retired Fairfield physician and a resident of the Fairfield community for over 55 years, died at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Jefferson County Hospital.

He had been in critical condition since suffering a stroke in his apartment at 55½ E. Broadway. When friends failed to see him on his general rounds Mar. 11, officers were notified and forceful entry was made to his apartment. Dr. BONNELL was found in a semi-conscious condition on the kitchen floor.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilson Hyde officiating. Private interment will be Monday in Evergreen Cemetery.

Dr. BONNELL was a member of the United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, B.P.O. Elks and Shrine.

Dr. BONNELL served the community as an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist for 35 years before his retirement from regular practice in 1950.

He was proud of his record of 2,150 tonsillectomies during his career. He said at one time he never lost a patient or signed a death certificate during his entire period as a practicing doctor.

In addition to carrying out his practice, Dr. BONNELL was heavily involved in real estate and owned a number of commercial buildings during his lifetime.

Moving to Fort Madison when a small child, he received his early education in that community and graduated from high school there.

He has had training in many fields in addition to medicine. He was still a card-carrying member of the International Association of Machinists at the time of his passing.

After working in railroad shops at Fort Madison, he embarked on his studies in medicine. He received a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Philadelphia, and later a degree in Pharmacy.

Continuing his education, he received his M.D. degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1913. He completed his specialty training at Washington University in St. Louis in 1915 and came to open his office in Fairfield. He had been a resident here ever since.

His first building venture was construction of the apartment building in 1922 at the corner of N. Main and Hempstead, now owned by Fred Turner.

He built what is now the Fairfield Hotel at 115 N. Main and sold it in 1950. At one time he owned the building on the southwest corner of the square which was sold in August, 1970; and purchased the building he still owned at the time of his death on the north side of the square in 1926.

Dr. BONNELL was born Dec. 2, 1884, at Larned, Kan., the son of Frank and Ella PEOPLES BONNELL. He was married to Edith LOCKHART July 7, 1913, who passed away Sept. 12, 1957.

Dr. BONNELL is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Robert M. MOYER, Fairfax, Va.; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mazie LOGAN, Mount Pleasant; and a brother, Carl BONNELL, Bradenton, Fla.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, a brother and a sister.
