January 5, 1979Mrs. BATES dies at 75
Marcella Eva BATES (sic. Eva Marcella BATES is engraved on her headstone), 75, former Fairfield resident, died Dec. 11 (sic. 1978) in Tucson, Ariz., hospital. She had been in poor health for two years.
She was born March 25, 1903 in Ottumwa, the daughter of William S. and Emma M. PARKS. She married Harley W. BATES in 1942. They owned and operated the Bates Motel in Fairfield. He died Aug. 19, 1960. She was a member of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. BATES is survived by one brother, Edwin PARKS of Tucson. The body was cremated and the ashes will be placed in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Note: Her DOD was previously listed in cemetery records and subsequent trancriptions as being January 4, 1979. Her obituary was published in the Fairfield Ia. Ledger on January 5, 1979 and it is possible that the January 4th date was assumed as being the DOD the day before publication of the obituary, instead of the December 11, 1978 date that it should be. How the cemetery records came to use the January 4, 1979 date isn't known. The SSDI record shows the death to be in December 1978.
Buried at some point in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Devotion B Lot 64 space 4.
