Eva Berniece BATES

Eva Berniece BATES, 96, Washington, Iowa, died at 7:14 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at Washington County Hospital in Washington.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Bell officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Family visitation will be 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to M.L. McCreedy Home and Washington United Methodist Church.

Mrs. BATES was born Feb. 7, 1902, in Joliet, Ill., the daughter of John and Lydia Ella RABER KANE. She married Clifford BATES Feb. 9, 1920, in Fairfield. He died Sept. 29, 1998.

Mrs. BATES attended Fairfield schools and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1919. She joined the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church in 1914 and served as pianist for nearly 35 years. She and her husband farmed in the Fairfield area all their lives. They moved to Washington in 1968 where she was a member of the Washington United Methodist Church. She was a member of Happy Day Club in Fairfield.

Survivors include one daughter, Edith BAKER of Washington; and two sons, Paul E. BATES of Fairfield and Merle K. BATES of Washington; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Leonard and Earl KANE; four grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
