Clifford F. BATES

Clifford F. BATES, 99, of Washington, Iowa, died at 11:55 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Bell officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Family visitation will be 6:30-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to M.L. McCreedy Home.

Mr. BATES was born April 16, 1899, on a farm north of Fairfield, the son of Ed and Annie BOOTH BATES. He married Berniece (sic - Eva Berniece) KANE Feb. 9, 1920, at the Methodist parsonage.

Mr. BATES received his education in the Jefferson County-Fairfield schools. He also attended a business college for a year. He was a farmer in Buchanan Township of Jefferson County before his retirement. He and his wife moved to Washington in 1968. He was a member of the Washington United Methodist Church and the Oddfellows Lodge in Perlee.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Edith BAKER of Washington; two sons, Paul BATES of Fairfield and Merle BATES of Washington; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harley BATES; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
