Patricia 'Patty' MINKLER HOWELL

Eleanor Patricia "Patty" MINKLER HOWELL, 91, of Gautier, Miss., died Friday, July 15, 2011, at home.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. July 28 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Pascagoula, Miss. Visitation will follow in Parish Hall.

A second memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 4 at Chapel of the Transfiguration at Kanuga Episcopal Conference Center in Hendersonville, N.C. Burial will follow in Kanuga.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the St. John's Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, 3507 Pine St., Pascagoula, or to the Patricia Minkler Howell Endowment for Children's Outreach at Kanuga Episcopal Conference Center, P.O. Box 250, Hendersonville, NC 28793-0250.

Mrs. HOWELL was born April 8, 1920, in Evanston, Ill., the daughter of Ricker and Louise Genevieve WATKINS VAN METRE. She married Frederick C. MINKLER Jr. Dec. 30, 1942, in Evanston, Ill. He died in August 1987 in Hendersonville, N.C. She married George W. HOWELL Oct. 24, 1993, in Hendersonville, N.C.

Mrs. HOWELL graduated in 1941 from Smith College in Northampton, Mass., and worked for the lost war bonds office of the U.S. Treasury Department in Chicago until marrying. Following her husband's return from military service, the couple moved to Pascagoula, Miss., in 1946, where Dr. MINKLER practiced medicine for many years.

Mrs. HOWELL and her second husband lived in Horse Shoe and Asheville, N.C., until moving to Gautier, Miss., in May 2011.

During her years in Pascagoula, Mrs. HOWELL was active in the Pascagoula Anola Club and Singing River Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and sang in the choir. At the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville, she and her husband were members of the St. Giles Singers for 10 years.

In 1956, she began attending Summer Guest Period at the Kanuga Episcopal Conference Center with her first husband. In 1978, the couple purchased a log cabin on the property and spent summers there. She continued the tradition with her second husband.

Mrs. HOWELL enjoyed singing, painting with watercolors and supporting the arts.

Survivors include her second husband; four children: Penny FITZ-RANDOLPH and husband David of Fairfield, Rick F.C. MINKLER III of Gautier, Peter MINKLER and wife Trudy of Hatch, Utah, and David MINKLER of Pascagoula; two grandsons; one stepdaughter, Jenny FELDER and husband Darryl of Lafayette, La.; and one stepson, Jeffrey HOWELL of Hilton Head, S.C.

She was preceded in death by her first husband; four siblings: Ricker VAN METRE, Genevieve FRERICHS, Janet MacMILLAN, and Peter VAN METRE; and one grandson.
