WM. A. BLACK, BATAVIA CIVIL WAR VET, DIES.

William A. BLACK, 85-year-old Civil War veteran of Batavia, Ia., died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John McCREERY, yesterday. He had resided in this county for the past 75 years, having been born in Coles County, Illinois, Dec. 27, 1847. The funeral services will be held at the Christian Church in Abingdon on Sunday at 2:30, in charge of Rev. L. R. Putnam. Burial will be in the family lot in Abingdon.... "Billy" BLACK, as he was better known in Batavia, was a member of Company F, of the 19th Iowa Infantry, in the Civil War, and was in the service for one year and five months. His wife, Louisa, preceded him in death in 1926, as did two daughters, Bertha who died in infancy, and Mrs. Tilda CLARK, of Ottumwa, who died in June 1933. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Minnie McCREERY, at whose home he passed away; Mrs. Nora JAMES, of Loveland, Colo.; Mrs. Martha KENYON, of Fairfield; David H. BLACK, of Phillips, Neb.; William Thomas BLACK of Linby, Iowa; and M. G. BLACK and Carl BLACK both of Batavia RFD. M. G. BLACK formerly operated a grocery store in Fairfield. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The grandchildren will act as casket attendants.

.... In 1867 he was united in marriage to Louisa PETERS who died in 1926. When a youth he united with the Christian Church at Abingdon and was ever a consistent and faithful member, and for a number of years served as Elder and Sunday School Superintendent. Mentions also a surviving sister, Mrs. Sarah BRADEN of Martinsburg, Iowa, and that he had been afflicted by blindness for the past 16 years.
