Page 10, Column 3ANDREW McCREERY DEAD. Pioneer of Keokuk County Passes Away at his Home at Abingdon. (Special to the Hawk-Eye.)
PACKWOOD, Ia., March 23 -- The venerable Andrew McCREERY died Tuesday night at his home in Abingdon. Deceased was born in Ohio in 1821, and when a lad of seven years went with his parents to Rushville, Ind. In 1844 he was united in marriage to Lucinda CALDWELL, who died in 1906 (sic - May, 1905). In 1847 Mr. and Mrs. McCREERY came to Keokuk County, Iowa, and settled near Martinsburg. They endured all the hardships the early pioneers were subjected to. Mr. McCREERY was for some time engaged in the mercantile trade at Martinsburg, but in 1867 he disposed of his stock of goods and moved to Abingdon, where he made his home until death. M.E. Ch.; ever a helpful member and for many years was class leader. A gentleman of the old school.... while always courteous he was uncompromising in his religion and politics, but always recognized good where he saw it. He was a great reader and remembered all he read. He was the father of eleven children, five dying in infancy. Five sons and one daughter, Mrs. John LOEHR of Fairfield, are living. All were present at the funeral but Will, who lives in Missouri, and was unable to come... Interment in Abingdon Cemetery. Mr. McCREERY is the last of the pioneers of this little town to pass away. Several died at the advanced age of ninety. Thos. W. Gobble, one of the early settlers, is still living at the age of 92, on the land he entered and which joins the village of Abingdon.
