ABINGDON--After a few hours illness Joseph DAVIS died Sunday morning, Oct. 8, at his home in Abingdon. He walked uptown on Saturday and went about in his usual manner. Mr. DAVIS was 84 years 3 months and 19 days old. He was born in Highland County, Ohio. He came here from Rush County, Indiana, in 1847, two years before Abingdon was laid out as a village, thereby being among the earliest settlers of this section. He was by trade a carpenter and was quite well known in this part of the county. "Uncle Joe," as he was familiarly known, was a quiet and unassuming man and persons who have known him for a lifetime say he was strictly honest and truthful. The writer has heard this said of him many times while he still lived. Frequently we do not hear much good of people until after death. Years ago Mr. DAVIS requested Rev. Jasper Smith, now of Hedrick, to preach his funeral sermon and selected as his text, Revelations 14:13. Funeral services were conducted Monday, October 9th, at the Christian Church and interment was made in the Abingdon cemetery....

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: Joseph was married three times: first, to Olegy ROBERTS who died in 1871, second to Rachel PLUMMER who died in 1898, and third to Ann HOLDEN PETERS TROXEL who died in 1897. All three of his wives are buried in Abingdon Cemetery as well, Olegy and Rachel as DAVISes and Ann as a PETERS.
