ABINGDON--Skillman DOUGHTY, or Grandfather DOUGHTY, as he was called, passed away Sunday morning at 10:30. He had been ill for some time; was 88 years 9 months and 1 day old (sic - 89-9-1); was among the first settlers of Abingdon. He worked at the trade of blacksmith until the last few years, when he was compelled to retire from business. He would have been buried with Masonic honors had not the rain of today prevented. June 13, 1887.

"Skillman DOUGHTY, who was a blacksmith by trade, was born in Virginia in 1797 and came to Iowa in 1845, where he resided until his death, June 12, 1887. His wife, Jane (DOWNEY) DOUGHTY, was born in Nicholas County, Ky., in 1795 and survived her husband by three years, dying in 1890 at Abingdon. At the time of her husband's death they had been married 70 years and three months, lacking one day....."
