Byron WEST Dies At 76

Byron "Barney" WEST, 76, native of Jefferson County and retired educator, died at 1:08 p.m Monday at the Jefferson County Hospital where he had been a patient since Sept. 24.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Bartruff officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Members of the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

W. Byron WEST was born May 1, 1901, in Jefferson County. He was the son of Lewis and Estella FOOTE WEST.

"Barney", as his many friends knew him, graduated from the Fairfield High School, Parsons College and the University of Missouri.

He began his teaching career at Batavia in 1926 as teacher and coach. After five years he moved to Berthoud, Colo., where he taught and coached for five years.

He served 19 years as principal and later as school superintendent at Carthage, Ill., and the next five years he served as director of industrial, vocational and adult education at East St. Louis, Ill. He retired in 1961.

His marriage to Bernice C. LEATHERS took place June 6, 1923. She survives. They returned to Fairfield in 1961 following his retirement. they spent the summers in Fairfield and lived at Fort Myers, Fla., during the winter months. The family home is at 604 S. Main.

WEST was a member of the United Methodist Church, and a former member of the National Guard. He was a member of the Iowa, Illinois and National Education Associations.

In addition to his widow, WEST is survived by one son, Byron Kenneth WEST, Winnetka, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. E. K. SPRATT, Muldrow, Okla. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
