B. F. WEST DIED HERE SATURDAY

Veteran Of the Civil War Passed Away At The Age Of Eighty Years

Benjamin F. WEST, a veteran of the Civil War, passed away at his home on East Adams street Saturday night, following an illness of several months. Mr. WEST was very well known in Fairfield, having made his home here for the past ten years. Previous to that time, he made his home at Birmingham and Salina.

Benjamin F. WEST, son of Alonzo and Mary WEST, was born in Bradford county, Pa., February 18th, 1842 and died here December 16th, 1922, aged 80 years, 9 months and 28 days.

He came with his parents from Pennsylvania to Illinois when a child and grew to manhood in that state, where he enlisted in the army. He first enlisted on January 1, 1862 in 1st Ill. Regiment of Volunteer Cavalry, and served with this regiment until the first of June 1864, and on June the 20, 1864 he re-enlisted in Com. D 50th Regiment of Ill. Infantry, and was finally discharged the 28 of June 1866, having served his country nearly three years and a half. He was with Sherman on his March-to-the-Sea.

He was united in marriage to Miss Delilah J. COOPER on Oct. 22, 1868 at Marshall, Saline county, Mo., and made their home there and at different points in Missouri until August 1880, when they removed to Birmingham, Iowa, where they lived for one year and then removed to Salina, Ia., where they lived until 1922 when they came to Fairfield where they have made their home.

There were born to them four children: Williston who died in infancy, Lewis of Winfield, Ia., Mrs. Luther MUNGER (sic - Ida) of Fairfield and Mrs. Stella _______ of _______ Wis. (unreadable - dark spot in film), all three of whom were with him in his illness and helped to care for him. Besides companion and children, he leaves five grand children and two great grand children and two brothers, Volney and Clinton WEST of Hannibal, Mo.

He united with the Methodist Epsicopal church in 1863 and remained a member until death. He was a good man, loving his home and beloved not only by his family but all who came to know him.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 oclock from the First Methodist church with Dr. C. L. Tennant officiating. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.
