OBITUARY

AMOS ALEXANDER FOOTE

Amos Alexander FOOTE, well known Fairfield resident and former business man, was born in Jefferson county, November 2nd, 1857.

He was the son of John Baldwin FOOTE and Mary HARPER and received his education in the country schools spending his earlier years on the farm.

January 15, 1880, Mr. FOOTE married Evangeline GORDON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph GORDON and in 1898, moved to Fairfield where he engaged in business. For many years he and Fayette Spencer conducted a meat market in the room now occupied by the Rains Grocery. Upon the death of Mr. Spencer, Dave Crail became a partner and the business was carried on under the firm name of "Foote and Crail" until advance in years caused Mr. FOOTE to retire from active business. He detested being idle and busied himself by buying and shipping livestock until failing health forced him to forego this activity. He was a great lover of fine livestock and was widely known for his keen ability in guessing weights. He was so accurate in guessing that he seldom missed more than fractions of a pound, the correct weight of an animal.

For the past year, Mr. FOOTE was confined to his bed and without any great suffering, gradually became weaker until he simply slept away at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 17th. Thus, as was ever his desire, he had what was apparently a perfectly natural ending to a long and active life.

Mr. FOOTE is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Frank RICKSHER, one brother, J. W. FOOTE of Los Angeles, Calif.; one grandson, Franklin C. RICKSHER. One daughter, Maud, passed away March 16, 1900. Also deceased are two sisters Rosa who was the wife of the late Dr. W. T. MACHESNEY of Bagley, Ia.; and Alma, wife of the late E. A. BOWEN of Los Angeles, and one brother John Greer FOOTE.

Memorial service February 19th, were conducted at the Murray Mortuary by the Rev. William Yingling with Marshall Barnes playing a group of hymns from a book published by the two brothers John Greer and James William, the well known FOOTE Bros. Evangelistic team of some years ago.

Interment was in Evergreen cemetery.
