Evelyn Grace WHITING

Evelyn Grace WHITING, 88, of Salem, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

A private family memorial service will be at a later date at New Sweden Lutheran Church, rural Lockridge. The body has been cremated.

Memorials may be made to Great River Hospice.

Arrangements are in the care of Kimzey Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. WHITING was born Jan. 19, 1923, at home in Four Corners, the daughter of Ernest and Addie CARLSON ARONSON. She married Joseph IRLA in San Francisco. She married Don WHITING in 1966. He died in 1974.

Mrs. WHITING attended Lodge ridge No. 1 grade school at Four Corners and graduated from Lockridge High School in 1940. She attended the Iowa Success Business School in Ottumwa. During World War II, she moved to San Francisco, where she worked as a secretary for the Transportation Corps of Fort Mason and for the Veterans Administration. In 1950, she moved to Fairfield and was a bookkeeper for Jefferson County Farm Supply Co. She then became the secretary for attorneys Richard Leggett and John Droz. She then became a secretary and key entry operator for Parsons College. She later was employed by the Easton Picture Co. in Davenport as a bookeeper diverse. After marrying, the WHITINGs moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1967. For 22 years, Mrs. WHITING was a key entry operator for Bank of the West, retiring in 1989. She the (sic - then) returned to Iowa and made her home in Salem.

In her early years, Mrs. WHITING was a member of New Sweden Lutheran Church, where she played piano and sang solos for worship services, weddings and funerals. She later joined First Lutheran Church of Fairfield and sang in the choir.

Mrs. WHITING played for 10 years in the Salem Kitchen Band. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Fairfield and served one year as president.

She enjoyed all kinds of music and crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed reading, watching television and playing piano.

Survivors include one daughter: Christine WILKERSON and husband Fred of Alturas, Calif.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, husband and former husband, Mrs. WHITING was preceded in death by two daughters: Charlene IRLA and Carolyn IRLA-WANDLING; four brothers: Mahlon, Verdon, Evan and Alton ARONSON; and two sisters: Fern MARTIN and Lillian THORNBURG.
