R. A. HARKNESS PASSED AWAY AT PANORA ON TUESDAY

A telegram was received in this city this morning telling of the death of Prof. Richard A. HARKNESS, which occurred last evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Samuel BROWN, at Panora (sic. Panora, Guthrie county, Iowa). He has been in poor health for several months. The exact cause of his death has not been learned.

Richard A. HARKNESS, son of Robert and Lydia HARKNESS, was born in Delhi, Delaware county, N. Y., November 25, 1839. He was a graduate of Union College and taught in New York for several years. In 1864 he moved to Iowa, where he resided until the time of his death.

He was an instructor in Parsons College for seventeen years after whcih he opened the Harkness Academy and continued teaching until about a year ago when he closed the school on account of poor health and advanced age.

Prof. HARKNESS was united in marriage to Miss Susie HUMESTON in 1865. To this union were born the following children: Dr. Carl HARKNESS, of Chicago; Mrs. Susan BROWN, of Panora, and Miss Mary HARKNESS, of New Orleans, La.; all of whom survive him.

The remains will be brought to this city Friday morning and the funeral will be held Friday afternoon from the Presbyterian church in charge of Dr. R. A. Montgomery. Intrement (sic. interment) will be in Evergreen cemetery.

DEATHS

HARKNESS.

Friends in Fairfield have been advised of the death of Prof. Richard A. HARKNESS at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Samuel BROWN, at Panora, Iowa, on Tuesday evening. He has been in poor health for some time and his death has been expected for several days.

Professor HARKNESS was born in New York, Nov. 25, 1839 and was a teacher in that state for several years. He came to Fairfield in 1864 and has made his home here since.

For seventeen years Prof. HARKNESS was an instructor in Parsons college and later conducted the Harkness adacemy. He enjoyed an enviable reputation as an instructor and was highly esteemed as a citizen of progressive ideas and activity. He was long a member of the Presbyterian church, and elder and prominent in church work and other forms of religious movement.

In 1865 Prof. HARKNESS was married to Miss Susie HUMESTON whom, with the following ihildren (sic), survive him: Dr. Carl HARKNESS, Chicago; Mrs. Susie BROWN, Panora; Miss Mary HARKNESS, New Orleans.

The body was brought to Fairfield and funeral services conducted at the Presbyterian church by Rev. Montgomery, president of Parsons college. Burial in Evergreen cemetery.
