MRS. MARY H. BLACK IS DEAD; FUNERAL HERE
Lived in Panora, Iowa, In Recent Years; Died In Illinois

Mrs. Mary HARKNESS BLACK, a former resident of Fairfield, passed away Sunday, at the home of her brother, Dr. Carl HARKNESS at Highland Park, Ill., according to word received here this morning by friends of the family. The funeral wil be held in Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, from the First Prebyterian church. Interment will be in the HARKNESS family lot in Evergreen cemetery.

Mrs. BLACK was a daughter of Prof. and Mrs. R. A. HARKNESS (sic. Richard A HARKNESS), Prof. HARKNESS being one of the strongest faculty members of Parsons college here a number of years ago. Mrs. BLACK was graduated from Parsons college in 1884. Her husband, the Rev. S. Charles BLACK, was graduated from the same college in 1892.

Mrs. BLACK also received her Master of Arts degree from Parsons in 1887; her Ph. D degree was conferred by Tulane University in 1900, and in 1918 Parsons college conferred upon her the title of Litt. D.

For some years Mrs. BLACK has made her home at Panora, Ia. Several weeks ago she was removed to the Methodist hospital in Des Moines and from there she was taken to the home of her brother in Highland Park. She was 64 years of age.

The body will be brought to Fairfield tomorrow from Highland Park and taken to the Presbyterian church. Rev. Gilbert Voorhies, pastor of the church, will have charge of the funeral service.

Note: The full given name was Mary Leal HARKNESS. She married Samuel Charles Black on June 29, 1921 in Fairfield, Iowa, and while they were on an extended wedding honeymoon to states out west, he suddenly died while in Denver, Colorado, just about four weeks after the marriage (he was born Sept. 6, 1869 and died July 25, 1921). His body was returned to Iowa and he was buried in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Page county, Iowa.

Mary Leal HARKNESS BLACK was born October 5, 1866 and died January 22, 1934. She was buried in the HARKNESS family plot at Evergreen cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. 2nd.215.
