Mrs. Abb GOEWEY

Mrs. Jean DOUGLASS GOEWEY, daughter of Daniel and Sarah VAN SLYKE DOUGLASS, was born in Clinton county, New York, Feb. 4, 1850, and departed this life at the County Home in Jefferson county, Iowa, on January 5 1930, aged almost eighty years.

In the late seventies she was united in marriage with Abb GOEWEY in New York State. Records of the life of Mrs. GOEWEY are brief but it is definitely known that one son was born to this union who grew to manhood and whose whereabouts have not been known for several years.

Mrs. GOEWEY had traveled extensively in the United States, records showing that she had spent several year (sic) in Wisconsin, South Dakota, Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa. She came from Omaha, Neb., where she was associated with her son, Robert, as editor of the Omaha Bee, to Lockridge, and spent several years teaching in the rural schools of the township and later secured the position of postmistress in Lockridge, which was her last active work.

She was not definitely associated with any church but letters to a friend in the last year of her life showed that she had come to a hope in Christ and eternal life beyond.

Four years ago her health failed so that she was no longer able to lead an active life and unfortunate investments of her small capital had swept it away, so that she was obliged to become an object of charity. The bitter struggle which this caused her was voiced in a letter which she had written to a former friend in the west, but which for some reason she had not posted when sickness overtook her in her home in Lockridge.

Few of her friends realized her real capabilities, but which were revealed after her unfortunate illness. Extensive writings of Mrs. GOEWEY's have fallen into the hands of friends which show her to be an author of no mean ability. This collection includes poems, prose and plays, all of which are based upon longings from her own heart and experiences encountered in her residence in the west.

Unfortunate circumstances caused Mrs. GOEWEY's life to close almost unnoticed, but to those who have been privileged to catch this intimate glimpse of the fullness of her life, it will be a never ending inspiration.
