Jere BRAY is Dead.

Jeremiah BRAY, whose serious illness was noted in "The Ledger" some time ago, died at his home in Blackhawk township, ten miles north of this city Wednesday (sic - January 24th). He had been ill for some time with an affection of the stomach and kidneys and his death was not unexpected. Mr. BRAY was born in Chatham county, North Carolina, August 8th, 1821. Eleven years later the family removed to Morgan county, Ind., where Mr. BRAY grew to manhood. He was married here in 1848 to Miss Emma HADLEY. In 1848 the young people came to this county and located on the farm on which they resided continuously until death. Mrs. BRAY passed away in August, 1856. A year later Mr. BRAY was married to Miss Tempy GREESON, who died in 1891. Five children were born of the first marriage, four of whom are now living -- Mrs. S. J. FITCH of Taylor county; Calvin BRAY of Westchester, Washington county; Mrs. Martha COFFIN and Sanford BRAY of this county. Of six children born of the second marriage five are yet living, all in this county -- Mrs. Amanda TRAIL, Mrs. Julia RICE, Albert, Levi and George. During his residence of nearly half a century in Jefferson county Mr. BRAY had formed many warm and lasting friendships, and his death will be very generally regretted. He had been a member of the Baptist church for more than fifty years, and he had closely followed its teachings in spirit as well as in letter. He had a reputation for honesty and integrity, for truth and veracity which no one could question. Funeral services were held in the Howard Grove church and the remains were interred in the cemetery near by. Rev. H. Shallenbarger conducted the funeral exercises.
