Mrs. Sarah J. CHANDLER died Sunday night at her home here. Sarah Jane HOUGH was born in Essex county, N.Y. in 1822, and in 1840 was united in marriage with Ward CHANDLER, a neighbor's son. In 1841 the young couple came to Jefferson county, Iowa, and cast their lot with other pioneers. Ten children were born to them, two dying in infancy and two sons and two daughters attaining manhood and womanhood to be claimed by death. Mrs. CHANDLER had many cares to contend with. Her husband died in 1869, after several years of invalidism, and left her the large family to rear and a farm heavily encumbered with debt. With clear mind and willing hands she went to work. The debt was paid, modern buildings took the place of the pioneer ones, and this heroic pioneer woman saw her sons and daughters grow and with her enjoy the fruit at their beautiful home. Mrs. CHANDLER, with her daughter Miss Vina (sic. Lavina CHANDLER, 1847-1928), came here about twenty-two years ago and they have since made it their home. She was a kindly, gracious woman of more than ordinary intelligence, who, by her acts of charity and unfailing kindness, endeared herself to all. Her mental faculties remained unimpaired until a few years ago, when she suffered a stroke of paralysis which affected her memory to some extent. The life forces gradually grew weaker and weaker until death came. Through the long and weary sickness no complaining word fell from her lips. The funeral was held at the M. E. church Tuesday, conducted by Rev. O. G. Orcutt. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Fairfield beside husband and children.
