Michael SHONDEL, Civil War veteran, died Saturday evening Sept. 8, 1928 at the Jefferson County Hospital, age 84-3-1. Member of Co. I, 49th Infantry. ...married in Putnam County, Ohio, Sept. 9, 1871, to Miss Susie MOREHEAD who has preceded him in death. Six children, 4 have passed away, Mrs. Mattie HECKETHORN and three children who died in infancy. James SHONDEL and Mrs. Zella OWENS of Centerville survive. Mr. SHONDEL married in this city July 10, 1896, Miss Anna HECKETHORN who survives. Seven children. Effel Mazell died at the age of four years and Lawrence when ten months old. The following survive: Arthur SHONDEL of Ottumwa, Mrs. Ella DENNISON, and Mrs. Nevada BRADLEY of Fairfield, Ernest SHONDEL of Burlington and Clyde at home.....

Note: Michael and Anna are buried in Old Fairfield City Cemetery, Lot 16. Michael's second wife Anna was the daughter of a neighbor, who repaid the favor by marrying a daughter of Michael's. Family relationships here may be tricky to figure out.
