OLD RESIDENT IS DEATH

Aged Polk Township Resident Buried Thursday at Abingdon - Came to Jefferson County in 1855

Richard MYERS, one (sic. of) the oldest citizens of Jefferson county, died at his home near Abingdon Wednesday afternoon after several months severe suffering with cancer on his face.

The funeral services were held from his home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. He is survived by his wife and three sons, C.S. and Emmett of Abingdon, and Steven of Nebraska. Two daughters and one son have preceeded him in death.

Mr. MYERS was born in Washington County, Pa., 1830 (sic. Feb. 20, 1830) and was the oldest of a family of thirteen children. in 1855 his parents came to Jefferson county where they made their home until death called them. In 1852 Richard MYERS married Miss Matilda GANET (a/k/a GAULT in some family references), a native of Pennsylvania. To them were born five children. Mr. MYERS brought his family west at the same time in which his parents emigrated to Iowa and settled in this county. Here his life work was that to which he was reared. Beginning with a farm of 80 acres Mr. MYERS steadily added to his possessions and sucess ever crowned his efforts. Without pecuniary assistance of any kind he started out in life and was, after years of toil, able to be ranked among the most prosperous of Jefferson county's farmers.

Although his life was a busy one Mr. MYERS found time aside from his business to devote to the advancement of all the worthy interests calculated to benefit the community. He had been a member of the Baptist church since early childhood.

In 1868 Mr. MYERS was called upon to mourn the loss of his wife. The following year he was joined in wedlock to Ruth FISHER, a native of Des Moines township. To them three children were born.

Throughout his residence in Jefferson county Mr. MYERS was looked upon as a practical and progressive farmer, an excellent neighbor and a kind husband and father.

The older residents of the county will deeply sympathize with the bereaved relatives in the loss of this good man.
