Charles Dean DOWNING

Charles Dean DOWNING, 80, of Batavia, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at home.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, with the Rev. Stephen Bowie officiating. The body has been cremated. Scattering of the cremains will take place at a later date.

Mr. DOWNING was born Jan. 20, 1931, in Bunch, the son of Fred Earl and Arminta Francis JARVIS DOWNING. He married Lela Mae ALBRIGHT Oct. 29, 1955, in Bloomfield.

Mr. DOWNING worked for Rockwell in Fairfield for more than 30 years.

He enjoyed being outside, fishing the banks of the Skunk and Des Moines rivers, hunting and gardening.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Brenda CARLSON and husband Pat of Georgia and Rosa HARTER of Batavia; three sons, Kevin DOWNING of Batavia, James DOWNING and wife Lisa of Fairfield and William DOWNING of Indiana; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frieda SIX and Suzie CARRIE, both of Ottumwa; and three brothers, Francis DOWNING of Oskaloosa, Floyd DOWNING of Knoxville, Ill., and Leonard DOWNING of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard Waynne MALLINGER; one daughter, Linda Sue DOWNING; two grandchildren; four brothers, Neil, James, Frank and Larry DOWNING; and one sister, Dixie HOPKINS.
