"Uncle Mat" McCLELLAN, known to almost every old resident of Jefferson County, is dead. He had long been a resident of this county, and at one time was quite prominently identified with local politics. He died at the house of Mrs. SPALTI, a daughter of W. G. WILSON, of this city, in Black Hawk, Colorado, May 1st, it is said of diphtheria. A writer in a Black Hawk paper says he had "known the deceased for the last thirty-two years. He, with his parents, was among the earliest settlers in the southern part of the then territory of Iowa. In August, 1847, he was elected coroner of his county. Two years later he was a candidate for sheriff.... At one time he was engaged in the mercantile business in the city of Fairfield, Iowa, and afterwards in the plow trade. He leaves three daughters in this state. His wife resides in Iowa. One son is in Wisconsin, another at Leadville. He was once a member of Clinton Lodge No. at, A.F. & A.M. of Iowa."

We do not think Mr. McCLELLAN could have been in Colorado very long, as we remember him of late in this vicinity. His death was sudden, but he was kindly cared for in his last hours by friends who were with him.
