CLAUD CARTER, FORMER LOCAL NEWSMAN, DIES

Death came yesterday afternoon to Claud W. CARTER, well known resident of Fairfield and Jefferson county. He suffered a heart attack Saturday evening and passed away the following day at the Jefferson county hospital.

CARTER had been in failing health since January 20th, but his condition was not considered serious until he was stricken Saturday night about 7:30 p.m. at his home. He was taken to the hospital where he went into a coma about 11:00 p.m. and passed away at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Last rites will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Hoskins funeral home with Dr. L. L. Weis in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

CARTER was in the newspaper business for several years in Fairfield before he went into business three years ago with his father at Brookville where they operated the general store. They held a closing-out sale at the store just recently and had moved back to Fairfield.

CARTER served as local circulation manager and reporter for the Davenport Democrat for several years. was was (sic) employed as city editor of the Fairfield Daily Ledger for a period during World War II.

He was also interested in local sports, and while in business at Brookville he managed the Brookville baseball team.

Claud William CARTER, 41, was born January 6, 1909, in Jefferson county, the son of Charles O. and Gertie GRAHAM CARTER. He was reared and educated in Jefferson county and graduated from the Fairfield high school. He later graduated from the Ft. Madison business college and began his newspaper career in 1929.

He spent his entire life in Fairfield and Jefferson county, and was a member of the Methodist church, B. P. O. E. 1192, and I. O. O. F. No. 4.

He is survived by his parents and the following brothers and sisters; Mrs. H. L. ELAND, Winfield, Iowa; Leland G. CARTER, Englewood, Colo.; Mrs. W. W. CLARK (sic - CLARKE), Dennison, Iowa; Mrs. W. H. HALL, Keota, Iowa; and Mrs. Jack SELLERS (sic - SELLARS), Ottumwa; and seven nieces and nephews.

Relatives From Away Here For CARTER Rites

Immediate relatives called here by the death of their brother, Claud CARTER this week, are returning to their homes. Two daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Charles CARTER will remain with their parents for another week. They are Mrs. W. W. CLARKE and two sons of Dennison and Mrs. Jack SELLARS of Ottumwa. Mr. CLARKE and one son, Jimny and Mr. SELLARS returned to their homes.

Other members of the family her were Mr. and Mrs. Leland CARTER and son of Denver, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. ELAND of Winfield and Mr. and Mrs. William H. HALL of Keota.

Other relatives attending the last rites from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. William RUSSELL, Mr. and Mrs. Ben JACKSON of Peoria, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry CARTER, Burlington; Harold CARTER, Mt. Pleasant; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford CARTER, Clinton; Mr. and Mrs. Robert CARTER and Carlin, Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph STOUT Jr., Hayesville and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph STOUT of Birmingham.
