DAIRY WORKER ENDS LIFE BY SHOOTING SELF

Coroner Jack Raymond said there will be no inquest in the death of Clifford W. BROWN, 52, local dairy employee whose body was found early this morning in the office at the Sidwell Ice Cream retail store at 112 E. Burlington.

Raymond said BROWN took his own life by shooting himself in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun. He estimated his death occurred about 6:45 a.m. today.

Officers said they were unable to find a note at the scene explaining his actions.

The body was found by Mrs. O. K. Phillips who operates the retail ice cream business in the front of the building. She discovered the body stretched out on the floor in the office shortly after she opened the place of business at 8 a.m.

Officers were summoned immediately and their investigation showed that BROWN had placed the shotgun at his chest and pulled the trigger. The coroner said death was apparently instant.

It was learned that BROWN left his home at 305 W. Madison street about 6:15 a.m. Reports stated he used his own shotgun while taking his own life.

BROWN had worked for the ice cream firm for the past several years, while it was still owned by R. R. Rider, Fairfield, and operated as the Rimac Dairy company, and more recently for the Sidwell Ice Cream company which purchased the business from Rider. He was employed in the wholesale department as deliveryman.

Before starting his work at the dairy BROWN owned and operated the Maid Rite sandwich shop here in Fairfield.

Clifford Weatherholt BROWN was born September 2, 1898, in Indiana, the son of the late Harvey and Mary DAVIS WEATHERHOLT. He came to this community when a small child and had made his home here since.

He was united in marriage on December 21, 1918, to Gladys ST. CLAIR who survives. The wedding took place in Fairfield. BROWN was a member of the First Methodist church and the Masons.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two children: Mrs. J. B. CURRAN, Ottumwa, and Don at home. He is also survived by two grandchildren and two brothers: Walter BROWN, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Louis WEATHERHOLT, Booneville, Ind.

The body is at the Hoskins funeral home where last rites are pending.
