James W. 'Big Jim' DABNER Sr.

James W. "Big Jim" DABNER Sr. of Richmond, Virginia passed away Friday, January 28, 2011. He was born May 23, 1935 in Iowa City. He was the son of Lou Morris ANDERSON and Roy Marcellus DABNER and stepmother Nadine ROBINSON DABNER. Jim was raised by his grandparents William DABNER Sr., and Ida HICKMAN DABNER in Fairfield. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1954 and was a United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents; son, Jeffrey W. DABNER; brothers, Edward ANDERSON and Phillip DABNER. Aunts, Lucille DABNER, Thelma DABNER BAGBY and Stella ROBINSON; Uncles, Walter DABNER Sr. and William "Bill Dab" DABNER Jr. of Fairfield.

Jim is survived by his loving and devoted wife Antoinette C. DABNER, children James W. DABNER Jr., and Ida M. MAYFIELD. Sisters Colleen RUMLEY, Sharon DABNER POLLARD, Joyce DABNER CARNEY, Trudy DABNER GIBBS and Barbara DABNER JAMES. Brothers Richard (Mary) DABNER and Roy F. "Pard" DABNER, former Fairfield Ledger photographer. He also leaves behind Aunt Georgia DABNER JACKSON, close family Thomas and George COPPEDGE and Marian MOSS, along with six granddaughters, four grandsons, five great-grandsons, one great-great-granddaughter, nine nephews, six nieces, 11 great-nephews, 14 great-nieces, four great-great-nephews and four great-great-nieces.

A memorial will be held Saturday, May 28, 2011 at the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. Paster (sic) Tyrone E. Nelson will preside.

In 1954, his senior year, "Big Jim" threw the shot put a record toss of 54' 5 1/2" for the Trojans. To date, it is the longest standing record in the history of Fairfield High School.
