Fairfield Ledger
March 10, 1897An Early Iowa Educator
A telegram was received in this city Thursday announcing the serious illness of Rev. Andrew AXLINE at Arlington, Kan., and was followed by another a few hours later stating that he was dead. Mr. AXLINE was one of the early school teachers of Jefferson county, and was closely identified with her educational interests for many years. He was a native of Ohio, and was in the sixty-seventh year of his age. He came to Fairfield shortly after completing his collegiate course, and began teaching in the schools of this county.
About 1858 he became the owner of the branch of the State university established in Fairfield, the building occupying the site where the residence of Ozro JEWETT now stands, and conducted it as a school of higher grade for many years very successfully. It was at that time one of the best known institutions in the state, and many of its students have taken high place in the affairs of the state and nation. It was largely through Mr. AXLINE's efforts that the Lutheran church of this city was organized, and he was its pastor for seventeen years after it was founded, his term of service beginning in 1858.
Mr. AXLINE was married here to Elmira STEVER (sic. Almira STEVER), and his wife and seven grown children survive him. He was a man of splendid character, had an excellent education and the energy and ability to make it useful to those about him as well as to himself. There are many old friends in this vicinity who held him in the highest esteeem and who will sorrow at his death. The family left Fairfield in 1874, and since that time Mr. AXLINE has been a minister in the Presbyterian church.
