Friday May 10, 1946DR. H.E. WOODS, PHYSICIAN FOR 60 YEARS, DIES
Dr. Harry E. WOODS, member of the first class to graduate from Parsons college, passed away at the Jefferson county hospital today at 4:00 a.m. At the time of his death he was 89 years old. He had been in failing health since February of this year.
Dr. WOODS, born and reared in Fairfield, had practiced medicine for 60 years. He had spent the past 37 years of his life in Birmingham where he was known throughout Van Buren county. Before going to Birmingham, he had practiced in Libertyville, Fairfield, Batavia, and Mt. Union.
He was next to the last member of the class of 1880 to survive. Sixteen students graduated from the first class at Parson (sic. Parsons) college in 1880. The only one surviving now, since the death of Dr. WOODS, is Mrs. Samuel LIGHT who resides at Tacoma, Washington.
Dr. WOODS received his AB and AM degrees at Parsons, and his MD at Rush Medical college in 1883. He had followed his profession for 60 years at the time of his death. He was a member of the Van Buren County Medical Society, the Sixty Year Medical Club and the Congregational church.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Methodist church at Birmingham in charge of Rev. Irvine and Rev. Burres. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Fairfield.
Dr. WOODS was born April 30, 1857, the son of the late Dr. Peter and Mary WOODS. He was reared and received his early education in Fairfield, and attended Parsons college. He married Margaret MONGER in January, 1893, at Libertyville.
Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Irene WOODS, Evansville, Indiana; Irma WOODS, Fairfield; and a brother, George WOODS also of this city.
The body is at the Monger funeral home, and will be taken to Birmingham tomorrow.
