LIFE OF HIRAM ASHMEAD

Hiram ASHMEAD was born at Pike Run, Penn., on Jan. 27th, 1835, and died at his home in Libertyville July 16th, 1918, at the age of 83 years, five months and 20 days. He grew to manhood in his native state and moved with parents to Iowa in 1856, living in Henry County for one year. They then removed to Jefferson County and settled on the farm now occupied by Charles Krueger near Mt. Zion Church. On July 18, 1859, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth MORRISON who survives him. His funeral was on the 59th anniversary of their marriage. To this union were born two sons and two daughters, Anna ASHMEAD and Allie CRAWFORD of Libertyville, Preston ASHMEAD of Ottumwa, and one son dying in infancy.

The ASHMEAD home was in the neighborhood of Mt. Zion throughout the years until 1901 when they moved to Libertyville. Mr. ASHMEAD was a soldier in the Civil War, entering the service on Oct. 1, 1864, and being mustered out July, 1865, at Louisville, Ky., He was a member of Co. E, 13th Iowa Infantry. He was a member of the Winsell Chapel Methodist Protestant Church.

He leaves beside his invalid wife and children, twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild, besides a large number of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, at 2:00 p.m., at Mt. Zion church, conducted by Rev. Stodghill and interment was at Winsell cemetery.
