MATHIAS, Helen Irene -- Helen Irene MATHIAS, 89, of Richland, died at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Woolson Friends Church, south of Richland, with the Rev. Harlan Van Voorst officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery in Tipton.

Open visitation will be from 5-6 p.m. Friday at Gould Funeral Home in Richland. Family visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials to Woolson Friends Church or Hospice of Washington County may be left at the funeral home or church or may be mailed to the family at 1090 Highway 1 and 78, Richland 52585.

Mrs. MATHIAS was born May 11, 1921, in Bloomfield, the daughter of Kost Wright and Lucy Irene BENGE DAUGHERTY. She married Mearl MATHIAS Sept. 27, 1941, in Missouri.

Mrs. MATHIAS grew up in the Bloomfield area and attended Bloomfield schools. She and her husband farmed in the Tipton area for a few years before moving to the Richland area, where Mrs. MATHIAS continued to help her husband farm.

She attended Woolson Friends Church and belonged to several local clubs, including the I95 Club, Woolson Clover Leaf Club and Woolson Missionary Society.

Survivors include two daughters: Marlene MATHIAS and Cynthia SYLVESTER and husband Phil, both of Richland; four sons: Dennis MATHIAS and wife Connie of Amarillo, Texas, Phillip MATHIAS and wife Marcia of Ottumwa, Roger MATHIAS of Richland and Daren MATHIAS and wife Peg of Richland; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Ilene HILLHOUSE of Iowa City and Thelma COVERT of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons: Marland and Dwight; five brothers: Omer, Harlan, Lindell, Darell and Charles DAUGHERTY; and one sister: Olive HENDERSON.
