Death Comes to Husband and Wife

Joseph B. YOUMANS died at his home in Libertyville the 1st inst., after an illness of less than a week. He was a native of Duchess county, N.Y., where he was born July 7, 1824, and grew to manhood. He was married there to Abigail SQUIRES. Mr. YOUMANS was the father of four children, three of whom are living - Mrs. H.A. HOOPES (sic. Laura YOUMANS HOOPES, a/k/a Mrs. Harley Allen HOOPES) of this city, Spencer YOUMANS of Smithshire, Ill., and Mrs. Fannie SHORES of Lombard, Ill. One son, Charles S., lost his life (sic. died on Oct. 22, 1898) from disease contracted in service in the war with Spain while a member of Company M of this city.

The YOUMANS family came to this county from Warren county, Ill., in 1892 and lived for several years on a farm in Center township, northeast of the city. Its home has been in Libertyville for eight years past. Mr. YOUMANS was a man of more than ordinary intelligence and of deep convictions. His honesty and integrity were never questiond and he was held in high esteem in the communities in which he had lived.

Mrs. YOUMANS was prostrated by the death of her husband and could not rally from the shock. She passed away Monday, less than a week after the death of her companion. She was a christian woman of many excellences, and her death will be very generally mourned by all who know her.

The body of Mr. YOUMANS was interred in the Evergreen cemetery (sic. Old.P.073), this city, Friday, and all that is mortal of the wife will be laid by his side today.

Mr. YOUMANS had been ill for about ten days but it was only yesterday that his condition became alarming. His daughter, Mrs. Harley HOOPES, of near this city was with him at the time of his death. Mrs. YOUMANS is reported ill. No arrangements have yet been made for the funeral but it will probably be held Friday. The remains will be brought to this city for interment.
