Note: Transcribed below are the initial death notice/obituary for Harry Jones published on the day of his death in the Fairfield Daily Ledger and the subsequent story in that same paper published four days later about the funeral services held. Harry Charles JONES was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa in OLD.P.171.

HARRY JONES DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Well-Known Photographer Called At Home This Afternoon

Harry C. JONES, 47, prominent Fairfield citizen, passed away shortly after 1:00 p.m. today, following a long illness. Mr. JONES had been in poor health for nearly a year, but his condition was thought to be improved during the past several months. He took a turn for the worst Sunday and was unable to recover.

Mr. JONES was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ollie JONES, and was born on the site where the Fairfield High school now stands. His father and grandfather were in the drug business on the north side of the square for a number of years. Mr. JONES attended Denver Business College in Denver, Colo., and has had a photograph studio in Fairfield for a number of years. In later years he has added radios and radio servicing to his line of business. For a number of years he was fire chief in Fairfield, resigning from active service only last year.

Mr. JONES is survived by his mother, Mrs. Charles TAYLOR (sic. Hattie G TILSON JONES TAYLOR), who has been with him for some time, and by his wife, Mrs. Ruth SIMPSON JONES. Surviving also are three daughters, Helen Ruth, Mrs. LaVerne HARLAN, and Nona Virginia, all of Fairfield. His father (sic. Albert Calvin JONES, 1859-1894) preceded him in death over forty years ago.

Funeral services will be held at the Hoskins Funeral Home at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27.

FIRE CHIEFS AT FUNERAL OF HARRY JONES

Over 300 Persons Attend Last Rites Of Prominent Citizen Sunday

Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. yesterday at Hoskins Funeral Home for Harry C. JONES, who passed away at his home Thursday afternoon. Over three hundred persons attended the services, among whom were several fire chiefs from Fairfield and surrounding cities.

These included State Fire Marshal J.V. PYLE of Des Moines, Chief J. A. WISHART and T. RUTHERFORD of Chariton, Chief R. T. COLLATT of Burlington, Chief J. C. DOBSON of Keokuk, L.I. MORRIS of Ames, and Chief and Mrs. Bernard MEANY of Ottumwa.

Pall bearers were Art COOPER, Ernest PEASLEY, Fred JOHNSON, O. N. BARTON, Everett HIGGENBOTTOM and Ernest BAILEY. Members of the Fairfield Fire Department acted as honorary pall bearers.

Harry Charles JONES was born in Fairfield, January 28, 1889. He had lived his entire life in Fairfield. He had been a member of the Fairfield fire department for twenty-six years, and was its chief for seven years, resigning from active duty only last year. He was connected for some time with the SIMPSON and Son meat market in this city, prior to the opening of his photograph studio in 1914. This studio he maintained since that time, adding in later years radios and radio repairing.

Mr. JONES had been in poor health for the past year, and seriously ill for the past four months. With him since September 3, had been his mother, Mrs. Charles TAYLOR of Los Angeles, Calif. Surviving also are his wife and three daughters, Miss Helen Ruth and Nona Virginia at home and Mrs. LaVerne HARLAN, also of Fairfield.
