Death of Philip HAMMOND

Philip HAMMOND's serious sickness, to which The Ledger has heretofore referred, finally resulted in death. After an illness of several years' duration, and of late accompanied by much suffering, Mr. HAMMOND passed away at his home on Sixth North street, this city, Thursday afternoon. Deceased was a native of Pennsylvania, and was born at Mechanicsburg, Cumberland county, April 15th, 1818. He grew to manhood in the locality in which he was born, and on December 24th, 1840, was married to Miss Mary ENSMINGER, who survives him. In 1848 Mr. and Mrs. HAMMOND removed to Ohio, whence they came to Iowa in 1864, locating on a farm just north of this city. Seven children were born to them, three sons and four daughters. Of those children four are now living--Mrs. John T. BOOTH and Mrs. John W. ROSS in this county, J. W. HAMMOND at Cheyenne, Wyoming, and W. H. H. HAMMOND at San Jose, California. During his quarter of a century's residence here Mr. HAMMOND had formed many warm friendships. He was an excellent man and citizen in every sense of the word, and those who knew him best esteemed him most. His funeral occurred Saturday afternoon, Rev. M. E. Dwight conducting the services.
