HALES, Janice Gwendolyn 'Jan' -- Janice Gwendolyn "Jan" HALES, 80, of Sun City, Ariz., died from complications of Hepatitis C Sunday, July 18, 2010, in Peoria, Ariz.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Douglas Harding officiating. Burial will be in Center Chapel Cemetery, southeast of Keosauqua.

Family visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials to Center Chapel United Methodist Church may be left a the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 10439 Prairie Hills Circle, Sun City, AZ 85351.

Mrs. HALES was born Nov. 8, 1929, in Poweshiek County, the daughter of John Gaylord and Florence PEASE DEMPSTER. She married Charles Eugene "Gene" HALES Sept. 12, 1948, at Oak Grove Friends Church near Grinnell.

Mrs. HALES grew up near Grinnell and majored in home economics at Iowa State College in Ames, where she played saxophone in the marching band. In 1950, she and her husband moved to Northwood. They later moved to Keosauqua, where Mr. HALES worked as county engineer. The later lived in Fort Madison and Council Bluffs before retiring to Sun City, Ariz. Mrs. HALES had worked as a bookkeeper.

She was involved in Business and Professional Women, Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of American Colonists, Colonial Dames and United Methodist Women. She was a longtime member of United Methodist Church.

Mrs. HALES mentored children in 4-H, Campfire Girls and her church's youth choir. She enjoyed golfing and bowling.

Survivors include her husband; five children, Esther LLOYD and husband John of Arizona, James "Jim" HALES and wife Lynn of North Carolina, John HALES and wife Jan of Nebraska, Steven HALES and wife Julie of Arizona and Myrna HALES and husband Dan McCARTHY of Indiana; and three grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, John Lynn DEMPSTER.
