VAN WEELDEN, Richard M. -- Richard M. VAN WEELDEN, 85, of Surprise, Ariz., formerly of Selma, died Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at Sun City West, Ariz.
A graveside service and burial of cremains will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah Cemetery north of Douds, with the Rev. Ann Donat officiating.
Arrangements are in the care of Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.
Mr. VAN WEELDEN was born March 17, 1925, in Albia, the son of Dick and Hazel GIBSON VAN WEELDEN. He married Virginia FINDLAY July 17, 1946, in Batavia.
Mr. VAN WEELDEN's mother died while he was young, and he grew up in his grandparents' home near Albia and later Selma. He graduated from Selma High School. He and his wife lived in Selma until moving to Arizona in 1951. Mr. VAN WEELDEN was a heavy equipment operator in road construction. He also had worked on the construction of the Alaska pipeline.
Mr. VAN WEELDEN served in Europe with the United States Army during World War II.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Eloy, Ariz., and an American Legion post in Casa Grande, Ariz.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Jane SCHUBERT and husband Rodney of Bonner Springs, Kan.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Milton and Emma GIBSON.
