HAMMES, Edwin Cyril -- Edwin Cyril HAMMES, 90, of Fairfield, died today, Monday, June 28, 2010, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Stephen C. Page officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.

Family visitation will be form 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield, with a prayer service at 6 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, Hospice of Central Iowa or Fairfield Lions Club.

Mr. HAMMES was born Jan. 20, 1920, in rural Keokuk County, the son of Michael and Cecilia STRIEGEL HAMMES. He married Vivian BOYLE MOGGED Feb. 8, 1974, in Fairfield.

Mr. HAMMES attended school in rural Keokuk County and was construction manager for Perrin Inc.

Mr. HAMMES served in the United States Army during World War II from March 4, 1942 to Oct. 3, 1945.

Mr. HAMMES was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in both Harper and Fairfield and Eagles Club. He also was a member of Fairfield Lions Club and received both the Lion of the Year and The Warren Coleman Award. He was honored as the State of Iowa Volunteer of the Year.

Survivors include his wife; five children, Doug HAMMES and wife Deb of Cedar Rapids, Chuck MOGGED and wife Jan of Colleyville, Texas, Jim MOGGED and wife Penny of Lindenhurst, Ill., Kathleen KELLER and husband Alan of Algona and Karen SWANSON and husband Dave of Fairfield; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six siblings, Elizabeth CONRAD of Sigourney, Beatrice CLUBB of Sigourney, John Marvin HAMMES of Fairfield, Kenneth HAMMES of Solon, Cletus HAMMES of Sigourney and Donna PAARMAN of Sigourney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Gregory MOGGED, Patrick HAMMES and James HAMMES; one brother, Lawrence HAMMES; four sisters, Leola HEISDORFFER, Agatha CONRAD, Dolores BAKER and Eveleen ULIN; and one grandson.
