SMITH, Lloyd F. 'Doc' -- Lloyd F. "Doc" SMITH, 96, of rural Cantril, died at 12:10 a.m. today, Friday, June 11, 2010, at Good Samaritan Society-Van Buren in Keosauqua.

A service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Paul Rekward officiating. Burial, with military rites by American Legion Russell-Strait Post No. 483 in Milton, will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril.

Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where family will be present from 3-5 p.m.

Memorials to Maple Grove Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at P.O. Box 194, Cantril 52542.

Mr. SMITH was born Feb. 6, 1914, on the family farm near Cantil, the son of Frank and Vina PIERCE SMITH.

Mr. SMITH lived on the family farm his entire life. He graduated from Cantril High School in 1933. He farmed and raised purebred Corriedale sheep. He judged several sheep shows, including two international shows in Chicago, and sold sheep to a variety of places, including Colombia, Peru and Mexico.

Mr. SMITH served in the United States Army in Europe and the South Pacific during World War II.

Mr. SMITH was president of the American Corriedale Association from 1955-1956 and in 1978 was recognized for his promotion and improvements of the Corriedale sheep breed. He was a member of Cantril United Methodist Church, Van Buren Telephone Co. board, State Savings Bank board, Maple Grove Cemetery board and Russell-Strait Post No. 483. He was a founder of the Van Buren County Sheep Empire Association, and he helped organize the first two Cantril school reunions. He was a member of Cantril Grass Roots organization. He was the last surviving charter member of Cantril Lions Club, and he received the Melvin Jones Award from the Lions in 1988.

Suriving are three nephews, inlcuding Billy "Butch" SMITH of Cantril and Larry "Zeke" SMITH of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Craig SMITH; and two sisters, Dorothy SMITH and infant Garnet SMITH.
