May 7, 1890Killed by a Runaway.
Mrs. J. H. CHARLES, wife of well known resident of Pleasant Plain, this county, was fatally injured by a runaway accident near Veo, about 11 o'clock Saturday morning. She was driving a pair of horses to a buggy to meet her husband at the latter place. A short distance east of the station, where the railroad and wagon road parallel each other for some distance, the team became frightened and ran away. Mrs. CHARLES was thrown from the vehicle with considerable force, alighting on her head. Her husband was on board the train which frightened the horses, saw them running and jumped from the cars while they were moving at considerable speed in order to go to his wife's assistance. When he reached her she was unconscious, and she remained in that condition until about 5 o'clock Monday afternoon, when death occurred from concussion of the brain. Immediately after the accident the unfortunate woman was carried to the home of Edgar George, near by, where she died. Funeral services were held there yesterday, and the remains, together with those of her babe, born since the mother was injured, were then brought to this city for interment. Mrs. CHARLES was a daughter of S.C. COWAN (sic. COWEN), a well known Blackhawk township farmer, and had considerable acquaintance in this city. She has been married less than a year. A wide circle of friends will sorrow with the husband and family in their affliction.

Note: Her given name may well have been Priscilla; at least two variations have been found - Pricie (on her headstone) and Priscie (marriage license in 1889 to John H CHARLES).
Buried in Evergreen Cemetery in 1st.024. While the obituary above provided that her "babe" was born and died since the accident, cemetery records per se do not indicate a separate burial for this infant. If buried with the mother, probably no record was made given the circumstances.
