GADDIS, Donald R. -- Donald R. GADDIS, 87, of Burlington, died at 5:10 a.m. Sunday, May 9, 2010, at Danville Care Center.

A service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, with the Rev. Dean Graber officiating. The body has been cremated. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Mr. GADDIS was born Oct. 11, 1922, in Fairfield, the son of Maude Irene HESTON. He married Zelma HUTTON Jan. 29, 1945, in Ottumwa. She died June 15, 1996.

Mr. GADDIS worked in production at Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant for 37 years, 14 of them as a foreman. He retired Sept. 7, 1987.

He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He also had served in the National Guard.

Mr. GADDIS was a member of Parkside First Baptist Church and American Legion.

He enjoyed bowling for years on the Plant League, playing fast-pitch softball, fishing, playing golf and doing woodwork.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth GADDIS and wife Lynda and Calvin GADDIS and wife Julie, all of Burlington; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two half brothers; and two half sisters.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Diana SMITH; one son-in-law, Mike SMITH; and one half brother.
