Frank 'Jeep' Edward CALHOUN

Frank "Jeep" Edward CALHOUN, 89, formerly of Birmingham, died Tuesday, April 27, 2010, in Des Moines.

A funeral was held April 30 at Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial was in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House.

Mr. CALHOUN was born in Fairfield, the son of Claude and Florence CALHOUN. He married Ruth WISEMAN June 5, 1951.

Mr. CALHOUN graduated from Birmingham High School. He received his teaching certificate from Parsons College and his master's degree from Drake University. He taught at schools in Lawton, Birmingham, Moravia and Ottumwa. He also taught at Kurtz Junior High in Des Moines and retired from Lincoln High School in Des Moines. He taught for 42 years.

Mr. CALHOUN was an United States Army medic (sic) during World War II. He served in Africa and Italy.

Mr. CALHOUN enjoyed spending time with family, attending church, teaching, coaching, golfing, bowling and writing poems. He volunteered summers as a nurse's aide at Mercy Hospital and volunteered at Hospice.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mark and Jim and wife Suellen; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one stepbrother, Bill CALHOUN; and one stepsister, Ethelyn OATES.
