POPEJOY, William Emsley -- William Emsley POPEJOY, 83, of Pleasant Plain, died at 2:50 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2010, at Polk City Nursing and Rehab Center in Polk City.

Arrangements are pending at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.

POPEJOY, William Emsley -- William Emsley POPEJOY, 83, of Pleasant Plain, died at 2:50 p.m. Monday, April 26. 2010, at Polk City Nursing and Rehab Center in Polk City.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Pleasant Plain Friends Church, with the Rev. Stan Baur officiating. Mr. POPEJOY requested cremation. Burial will be in Pleasant Plain Friends Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Memorials to Pleasant Plain Friends Church, Walton Club or Iowa Hospice may be left at the church or may be mailed to the family at 108 Crestmoor Drive, Polk City 50226.

Arrangements are in the care of Gould Funeral Home of Brighton.

Mr. POPEJOY was born July 4, 1926, in Birmingham, the son of Bernard M. and Anna L. CANADAY POPEJOY. He married Virginia SHAFFER June 8, 1944, at her parents' home in Washington, Iowa.

Mr. POPEJOY moved to Pleasant Plain while very young and graduated from Pleasant Plain High School in 1943. He was an interior and exterior spray painter, floor sander and refinisher and cabinetry designer and builder, before he and his wife owned and operated Popejoy's DX in Brighton from 1968-1996.

Mr. POPEJOY served in the United States Army in Germany during World War II.

Mr. POPEJOY was a member of the Walton Club in Fairfield and Fairfield American Legion.

He enjoyed bowling, golfing, making golf clubs and repairing golf carts.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Dixie INMAN of Libertyville, Ill., and Peggy KERR and husband George of Polk City; one daughter-in-law, Jill POPEJOY of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Randy POPEJOY; and one brother, Bernard Jack POPEJOY.
