CRANE, Carroll S. -- Carroll S. CRANE, 98, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Round Prairie, died Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Park Place Care Center in Mount Pleasant.

A service wll be at 2 p.m. April 8 at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant. Burial will be in Lambirth Cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 7 at Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant.

Memorials may be directed to Calvary Baptist Church.

CRANE, Carroll Shelman -- Carroll Shelman CRANE, 98, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Round Prairie, died Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Park Place Long Term Care Unit in Mount Pleasant.

A service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Timothy Graham and the Rev. Mike Hess officiating. Burial will be in Lambirth Cemetery, southeast of Lockridge.

Family visitation will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.

Memorials may be directed to Calvary Baptist Church.

Mr. CRANE was born Dec. 22, 1911, in Jefferson County, the son of Walter and Elsie SHELMAN CRANE. He married Lola Gladyce WILLIAMS in October 1934. She died Nov. 7, 1957. He married Marie SWAN SLOAN Oct. 15, 1962. She died June 29, 2002.

Mr. CRANE farmed southwest of Mount Pleasant in the Round Prairie area and raised Angus cattle. He also worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown for 20 years. After retiring, the CRANEs moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., in 1977 and lived there for 24 years. They moved back to Mount Pleasant in 2001.

Mr. CRANE was on the Henry County Development Board and had been a county supervisor for four years. He belonged to the Goal Line Club and Coin Club. He was an active member of the Republican party and was a volunteer at Midwest Old Threshers Reunion for many years. He had attended Round Prairie Baptist Church, Tri City Baptist Church in Port Charlotte, Fla., and Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant.

In Florida, Mr. CRANE gardened, golfed and volunteered at the Senior Cultural Center, where he grew rose plants and was a tour guide. He also raised experimental roses for Jackson & Perkins.

Survivors include two sons, Doyle CRANE and wife Rose of Carol Stream, Ill., Wray SLOAN and wife Yvonne of Mount Pleasant; three daughters, Lonna PHELPS and husband Dave of Salem, Judith SLOAN CLINE of Mississippi and Joyce SLOAN SMITH and husband Bob of Clarence; one daughter-in-law, Linda SLOAN of Mount Pleasant; 24 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Lauren, Frank and John SLOAN; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.
