Dean McCLATCHEY

Dean McCLATCHEY, 87, of New Bern, N.C., formerly of Fairfield, died from heart failure Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at Southminster Retirement Community in Charlotte, N.C.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Garber Methodist Church in New Bern, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gilda's Club of Evansville, P.O. Box 5134, Evansville, IN 47716. Donations also may be made to the YMCA, National Heart Association, Cancer Society, Garber Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. McCLATCHEY was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Yale, the son of Bert William and Violet CLAUSSEN McCLATCHEY. He married Maxine GIEFER Dec. 18, 1943.

Mr. McCLATCHEY served in World War II. After completing his aviation cadet training in Lubbock, Texas, he received his wings and became a B-24 flight instructor in Liberal, Kan.

After the war, Mr. McCLATCHEY attended Iowa State University in Ames, where he received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He and his wife lived in Texas, where he was employed by Magnolia Petroleum, until moving to Fairfield in 1951. Mr. McCLATCHEY went to work in sales for Herman M. Brown Co. in Des Moines. In 1962, the McCLATCHEYs moved to Burlington, where Mr. McCLATCHEY joined the Raid Brothers Quarry business, which merged with Medusa Cement Company. In 1972, the family moved to Owensboro, Ky., where Mr. McCLATCHEY managed quarries in Kentucky and North Carolina. After he retired from Medusa, Mr. McCLATCHEY purchased Chance Construction Company in New Bern, N.C., in 1979. In 1999, he sold the business to S.T. Wooten.

Mr. McCLATCHEY served on several boards of directors, including the Owensboro National Bank board. He also was appointed to the North Carolina State Contractors' Licensing Board. He was a member of the Noon Rotary Club in New Bern, Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge and Shriners.

Mr. McCLATCHEY owned a series of private airplanes, which he used for business and pleasure. He was a hunter, fisherman, boater, golfer, photographer and lover of all wildlife. He was a longtime member of the YMCA, where he biked and lifted weights.

Survivors include his wife; one brother, Jim McCLATCHEY of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Doris GERNER of Kansas City, Mo.; one son, Bruce McCLATCHEY of San Francisco, Calif.; one daughter, Katherine MALSBARY and husband Gerald of Gastonia, N.C.; one son-in-law, Randy MOORE of Evansville, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Irene ESSENBERG; and one daughter, Ann Elizabeth MOORE.
