GERDES, Harold W. -- Harold W. GERDES, 92, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at Halcyon House in Washington following a brief illness.
A celebration of life service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington, with the Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.
Visitation will begin at noon Friday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6-8 p.m.

Mr. GERDES was born March 22, 1917, in Washington County, the son of Phillip and Emma BURGER GERDES. He married Joella J. BEENBLOSSOM Oct. 5, 1940, in Washington, Iowa. She died in 2004.
Mr. GERDES graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1935 and attended business college in Cedar Rapids. He farmed all his life in Washington County.
Mr. GERDES was a member of the Methodist church in Ainsworth. He served on the Ainsworth School Board and was a member of the Ainsworth Lions Club.
Mr. GERDES enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and caring for his wife. He was an Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
Survivors include one son, William GERDES and wife Linda of Dubuque; two daughters, Linda OAKES and husband Denny of Fairfield and Patti MITCHELL and husband Jerry of Iowa City; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Irene GERDES WOOD; and one brother, Raymond GERDES.
