MEYER, Walter C. -- Walter C. MEYER, 87, of rural Keosauqua, died at 2:40 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Clark County Nursing Home in Kahoka, Mo.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Larry Wallingford officiating. The body has been cremated. Burial, with military rites by American Legion Sargeant-Osweiler Post No. 563, will be in Vernon Cemetery.

Open visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6-7:30 p.m.

Memorials to Vernon Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 23084 Quail Road, Keosauqua 52565.

Mr. MEYER was born May 3, 1922, near Vernon, the son of M. Clifford and Carrie WALTER MEYER. He married Juanita THOMPSON April 14, 1946. She died June 13, 2002.

Mr. MEYER lived in Henry Township in Van Buren County all his life except while serving in the United States Navy in Alaska and the Pacific Theater during World War II. He farmed, drove a petroleum truck and constructed grain bins for Big 3 Farm Service Co. He also worked at Metro-Mail in Mount Pleasant. He received an award for growing corn in 1949 from DeKalb Seed Corn Co.

Mr. MEYER was a Methodist. He served several years as president of the Van Buren County Farm Bureau and was a 64-year member of American Legion Sargeant-Osweiler Post No. 563 of Bonaparte. He had also served on the Vernon Cemetery Board and was a member of the former Bonaparte International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge.

Survivors include three daughters, Lila Kay BAXTER and husband Carl of Keosauqua, Sharon MILLER and husband Bud of Keosauqua and Waverly SNOW and husband Mike of Farmington; four sons, Larry MEYER and wife Letty of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mark MEYER and wife Pam, Darrell MEYER and wife Kathy and Gregg MEYER and wife Kim, all of Keosauqua; 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harold and Sherman MEYER; and three sisters, Orpha MEYER, Juanita ACHENBACH and Opal OLSON.
