THOMAS, Stuart F. -- Stuart F. THOMAS, 89, of rural Keosauqua, died from cancer at 8:10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center hospice unit in Keosauqua.

A service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron and the Rev. Wes Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Fiedler Cemetery southwest of Eldon.

Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 5-7 p.m. followed by a Masonic service.

Memorials to Fiedler Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 13488 172nd St., Douds 52551.

Mr. THOMAS was born Oct. 31, 1920, near Eldon in Wapello County, the son of Carl H. and Lena V. LYNCH THOMAS. He married Doris M. DeVAULT June 22, 1941, at her parents' home in rural Selma.

Mr. THOMAS graduated from Eldon High School, where he played basketball, in 1939. He and his wife lived in Wapello County prior to moving to a farm north of Lebanon. He and his wife raised registered Milking Shorthorn cattle for several years and showed them at the Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo, Iowa State Fair and several local county fairs. He ran the Soil Conservation Service terracing machine for Van Buren County in the 1950s, served on the United States Department of Agriculture County Committee and plowed in district and state plowing matches throughout Iowa.

During World War II, Mr. THOMAS drove a truck during the construction of the Ottumwa Naval Air Station.

Mr. THOMAS was a member of Eldon Christian Church and Ancient Free and Accepted Masons Celestial Lodge No. 413 of Douds. He had run for county office as a Republican.

Mr. THOMAS enjoyed restoring Massey-Harris tractors, woodworking and helping family and neighbors.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ivan of Douds and Melvin and wife Judy of rural Keosauqua; one daughter, Shirley TEDROW and husband Wayne of Cantril; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, William THOMAS of Bloomfield and Robert THOMAS of Eldon; and one sister, Evelyn Faye EVERLY of Bloomfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Alice THOMAS; and one brother, Stanley THOMAS.
