Mrs. GABBERT was born July 5, 1922, near New Sharon, the daughter of Harry Watson PHILLIPS and Grace CRONK PHILLIPS. She was proud of her Iowa farm heritage, and she cherished memories of flying with her father in his Piper Cub. She married Dean GABBERT Oct. 9, 1942.

Mrs. GABBERT received her high school diploma at Lacey Consolidated School and her bachelor's degree at Parsons College. "I came to Fairfield in 1940 and I never went home," she laughed. First there was college, then marriage, children and 20 or so years as a member of The Fairfield Ledger news staff as a feature writer and columnist.

As a journalist, Joyce wrote with enthusiasm, emotion and humor. During the 1970s, she wrote a personal and popular column for the Ledger entitled "In Retrospect." Her front-page story about the closing of Parsons College in 1972 was a first-place winner in a newswriting competition sponsored by the Iowa Daily Press Association.

She was a member of Nauvoo Presbyterian Church, Chapter JO of PEO and Monday Study Club.

Survivors include her husband; four children, Deanne WHITE of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, John GABBERT of Winona, Minn., Gretchen VanDeVOORDE of Fairfield and Lisa GILLESPIE of Ottumwa; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
