WORLEY, Lester L. -- Lester L. WORLEY, 82, of Washington, Iowa, died from cancer Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at home.

A Mass of the Resurrection and celebration of life service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa. Interment, with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29, will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.

Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Iowa City Hospice.

Mr. WORLEY was born April 6, 1927, the son of Clayton and Dorothy BELIEL WORLEY. He married Rose Mary FRITZ Sept. 8, 1948, at St. James Church in Washington, Iowa.

Mr. WORLEY attended school in Brighton and Washington, Iowa. He owned and operated Hometown Dairy in Washington, Iowa, and later owned and operated Gulf Service station with his brother Verle. He worked as the service manager at the Chevrolet dealership in Washington and also as parts manager at Crane Valves. He also worked as the custodian at the Washington County Courthouse and later at St. James Catholic Church.

Mr. WORLEY served in the United States Navy aboard USS Knudson from December 1944 until August 1946. He was stationed on the destroyer escort that kept watch during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and also during the signing of the peace treaty ending World War II.

He enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards and cribbage and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Diane WORLEY of Iowa City, Debra RIVEY and husband Mike of Missoula, Mont., Cassandra PUDER and husband Jason of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Amy PURDY and husband Nate of Olathe, Kan.; two sons, LaVon WORLEY and wife Judy of Sperry and Les WORLEY and wife Linda of Coralville; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one sister, Doris MINEART of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Stephen; and five brothers, Bob, Verle, Ken, Jim and Raeferd.
