H.C. WHITING Dies Following Brief Illness

Dr. Harry C. Whiting, 602 South Main St., who passed his 80th birthday in July of this year, died this morning at 10:25 o'clock in the Jefferson county hospital where he had remained in a serious condition since he entered Wednesday afternoon following a sudden illness a few hours before while at work in the yard of his home.

Funeral services are tentatively planned for Monday afternoon at the Presbyterian church. The body has been taken to the Monger funeral home.

Besides his wife, Carrie S McELHINNY WHITING, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ansel GILLIS, Pasadena, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. May ALLEN, Milwaukee, Wis.

Dr. WHITING, D.D. and M.D., has been pastor of the Presbyterian churches at Brighton, Cross Lanes, and Libertyville the past 17 years. He spent his boyhood in the Mr. Pleasant community and was one of the first students of the Parsons college preparatory school, called the academy. He was active in college affairs since that time. Earlier this year he presented the college with his rare and enviable collection of minerals.

In his earlier days, Dr. WHITING served 16 years at Charyung, Korea, as a medical missionary sent out by the board of foreign missions of the Presbyterian church. During his service there, the degree of doctors of divinity was conferred upon him by a church college. During his medical college days he was a classmate and roommate of the late Dr. Charles MAYO and in 1941 went to Rochester, Minn. to attend a reunion at which MAYO was host.

WHITING RITES HELD MONDAY AFTERNOON AT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Funeral service were held Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the First Presbyterian church for Dr. Harry C. WHITING, 80, one of the county's most prominent citizens, who passed away August 18 at the Jefferson county hospital after a brief illness.

Dr. Fred Eastwood, pastor of the New London Presbyterian church, lately of the Washington, Ia. Presbyterian pastorate, a long time friend of Dr. WHITING, officiated, assisted by Dr. Curtis R. Douglass, pastor of the local church. Services were continued at the graveside at Evergreen Cemetery with Dr. Douglass giving the closing prayer and benediction.

Marshall Barnes played a 15-minute prelude at the organ before the services and accompanied Dr. WHITING's nephew, Stuart GILLIS of Pasadena,, Calif. who sang "The Lord is My Shepherd". The body lay in state at the Monger Funeral home yesterday until 2 p.m. before being taken to the church.

The following ministers, members of the Fairfield Ministerial Association were honorary pallbearers; S.P. Williamson, E.A. Piper, A.P. Keast, Erle Hobson, R.E. Hodgson, M.S. Ellick, Ronald Jennings, and G.J. Dingman. Active pallbearers were: Dr. Herbert C. Mayer, L.N. Frescoln, Harvey Gaumer, H.S. Sellers, John Montgomery and William Stever.

Among the out of town relatives and friends were a daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Ansel GILLIS, Pasadena, Calif.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Ray GENET and grandson Stuart GILLIS, also of Pasadena; Clarence GRAY, Danville, Ky; Miss Edith WHITING, Henry GILLIS, and James G. GILLIS, all of Mr. Pleasant; Mrs. William Nanes, Des Moines; Mr. Messer, former principal at Brighton and Mrs. Messer; and many members of Dr. WHITTING's parishes at Libertyville, Cross Lanes, and Brighton, as well as friends from the surrounding community.
