HYMES, Paul J. 'P.J.' Sr. -- Paul J. "P.J." HYMES Sr., 80, of Rock Island, Ill., died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at home.

A service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield. Burial will be in Packwood Cemetery, Packwood.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home in Rock Island and from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home in Fairfield.

Memorials may be made to the Rock Island Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1303.

Mr. HYMES was born Sept. 1, 1928, in Dean, the son of Charley and Jennie Mae HARRETT HYMES. He married Mary I. MELLOTT HUTTON June 25, 1949, at Fifteenth Avenue Christian Church in Rock Island. She died Nov. 23, 2001.

Mr. HYMES worked as a truck driver for various trucking firms in the Quad Cities area, most recently for A & D Trucking of Bettendorf. He retired after more than 50 years on the road. He also was a master mechanic.

Mr. HYMES was a World War II United States Navy veteran, having served on board the U.S.S. Newman K. Perry D.D. No. 883. He operated in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and participated in America's large-scale testing program of the atom bomb in the Marshall Islands at Bikini Atoll.

Mr. HYMES was a life member of Rock Island VFW Post No. 1303.

Survivors include four children, Margo FETES of Moline, Ill., Elizabeth BLASKA of Monticello, Minn., Paul J. "P.J." HYMES Jr. and wife Donna and Katie HYMES-RIECHERS and husband Ben of Coon Rapids, Minn.; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by seven siblings, Leonard, Mildred, Eldon, Melvon, Virgil, Thelma and his twin sister, Pauline; and one son-in-law, Louis "Skip" FETES III.
