FRITZ, Walter J. -- Walter J. FRITZ, 83, of Brighton, died late Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Washington Care Center in Washington, Iowa.

Arrangements are pending at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.

FRITZ, Walter J. -- Walter J. FRITZ, 83, of Brighton, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Washington Care Center in Washington, Iowa, following a short illness.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Saints Joseph and Cabrini Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain, with the Rev. Paul J. Appel officiating. Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Cemetery.

Open visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday at the church, with the family present from 6-7:30 p.m. and Prayers for a Christian Wake at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials have been established to Saint Joseph Cemetery Association and Hospice of Washington County.

Gould Funeral Home in Brighton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. FRITZ was born June 22, 1926, the son of Michael E. and Gertrude E. ARNDT FRITZ in Brighton. He married Donna June KROTZ April 28, 1962, in Washington, Iowa.

Mr. FRITZ graduated from Brighton High School in 1944. He was employed 33 years with the United States Postal Service and retired from his career as postmaster of Brighton in 1992. He also was a farmer, working on the farm where he grew up.

Mr. FRITZ was a specialist third class in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955.

He was a lifetime member of Saints Joseph and Cabrini Catholic Church.

Mr. FRITZ enjoyed eating German food and chocolate ice cream, gardening, coin collecting and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed country music, especially playing the harmonica and the guitar.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jeffrey of Brighton, Frank and wife Julie of Fairfield and David and wife Margarita of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Lisa KRAMER and husband Kevin of Hiawatha, Diana DINGMAN and husband Glenn of Bloomington, Ind., and Angela DAVIS and husband Randall of Mission, Kan.; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Robert and Sylvester of Brighton and Cletus of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and two sisters, Marian RELINGER of Harper and Loretta SCHNEIDER of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Alice REDLINGER; and two brothers, Richard and John.
